About Ultra

Ultra builds industrial AI robots that are working in the real world today. Our robots automate mission-critical warehouse labor end-to-end, starting with e-commerce order packaging. We deploy fast, learn from real production data, and iterate aggressively. We already have multiple revenue-generating robots operating in U.S. warehouses, and are now scaling toward hundreds of deployments over the next couple years. Our goal is simple: build the most advanced, most productive industrial AI robots on the planet.
We’re seeking a Senior Mechatronics Engineer - Robot Platform to join our NYC-based team and help evolve our robot platform from high-performing prototypes into scalable, resilient products ready for manufacturing and deployment at scale.
This role sits at the intersection of R&D, operations, and supply chain. You’ll take feedback from our deployed systems as well as new R&D concepts and drive them toward manufacturable, resilient, and supportable systems — making the right tradeoffs between performance, reliability, cost, and scalability.
We are an early-stage company moving very fast in a rapidly growing space, and welcome people from any background as long as you’re excited to join our mission, drive immediate impact, and help create a future where automation is accessible to all.

What You’ll Do

  • Own a significant portion of our robot's hardware platform - you are responsible for mechanical and electrical design and component selection.
  • Work with operations and deployment teams to identify recurring field issues and solve them with engineering improvements
  • Help transition advanced R&D prototypes that expand our capabilities into platform designs we can deploy at scale
  • Help define platform standards, common interfaces, and reusable modules that simplify assembly while improving resilience and serviceability
  • Collaborate with the larger team to select reliable hardware partners, improve component quality, and reduce supply chain risk.

Who You Are

  • You have seen a hardware platform transition from early stages to scale, and understand all of the pieces that are necessary to make that scale possible.
  • You naturally consider reliability, maintainability, and operational realities when making design decisions.
  • You’re comfortable moving between mechanical, electrical, and systems-level thinking.
  • You thrive in high-trust, high-autonomy environments and work backwards from real-world needs.
  • You enjoy turning messy, early-stage designs into clean, robust, repeatable systems.
  • You are hungry for impact and personal growth, and want to help build the future of robotics with a small, highly capable team.

Experience and Skills

  • Full-stack mechatronics experience
    • 3D design, rapid prototyping, and design for manufacturing/assembly
    • Mechanical and electrical assembly, debugging, hands-on fabrication
    • Experience improving reliability and simplifying designs for production
    • Strong intuition for failure modes and operational resilience
  • Platform & manufacturing
    • Experience shipping hardware into real-world environments
    • Working with CM/ODM partners or production suppliers
    • Understanding of mechanical tolerances, electrical wiring and strain relief, QC processes, and scaling challenges
    • Sourcing motors, sensors, cameras, and custom components
  • Communication & collaboration
    • Strong communication skills with vendors, customers, and internal teams
    • Excellent research and problem-solving ability — able to quickly evaluate tradeoffs across vendors and technologies and know when to go deep on a problem
    • Willingness to travel to customer and supplier sites within the US and internationally to build strong relationships across the board (including China, Mexico, and the EU)
Expected Compensation
$150,000 - $225,000/annual salary + equity + benefits
This compensation range may be inclusive of several career levels at Ultra and will be narrowed during the interview process based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Adjustments outside of this range may be considered for candidates whose qualifications significantly differ from those outlined in the job description.
