Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated Associate Manufacturing Engineer on a permanent basis to join our Cork team.

Job Purpose:

The Associate Manufacturing Manager will lead and develop the manufacturing engineering capability for a high-volume value stream operating highly automated production lines, with a strong focus on equipment reliability, process capability, patient safety, product quality, output and cost.

This role provides visible people and technical leadership to Manufacturing Engineers and technical resources while maintaining strong technical expertise in automated equipment, mechanical systems and controls. The Associate Manufacturing Manager will drive robust problem-solving, equipment and process improvements, validation and verification, and sustainable manufacturing performance in a near-continuous production environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide visible engineering leadership for highly automated manufacturing lines operating on a near 24/7 basis, ensuring the team is responsive to safety, quality, service, output and cost priorities.
  • Lead, coach and develop Manufacturing Engineers and technical resources supporting the value stream, setting clear priorities, building capability, providing feedback and creating accountability for delivery.
  • Own the technical health and manufacturing engineering strategy for the value stream, developing a strong understanding of equipment, process interactions, constraints, failure modes and capacity requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership for automated manufacturing equipment and systems, including mechanical systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), vision systems, sensors, motion and control systems, robotics, and automated assembly and test technologies.
  • Drive equipment reliability and uptime through effective preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, critical-spares planning, obsolescence management, structured breakdown analysis and sustainable corrective actions.
  • Lead structured root-cause problem-solving for complex equipment and process issues using data, statistical analysis and empirical methods, ensuring countermeasures address systemic causes and are sustained.
  • Drive improvements in overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), throughput, cycle time, yield, scrap, downtime and process capability using Value Centred Engineering, Lean Six Sigma and other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Ensure manufacturing processes and equipment remain in a validated and controlled state. Lead or oversee equipment qualification, process validation and verification activities, including risk assessments, protocols, execution, documentation and change control in accordance with the Quality System.
  • Provide engineering leadership for equipment modifications, automation upgrades, line transfers, capacity expansion and new equipment introductions, from requirements and specifications through design review, vendor management, acceptance testing, commissioning, qualification and production handover.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Quality, Process Development, Maintenance and Technicians, EHS, Supply Chain, and other stakeholders to ensure manufacturing solutions are robust, maintainable, compliant and aligned with value stream objectives.
  • Act as a key liaison between Quality and Engineering for value stream equipment and process matters, ensuring timely resolution of nonconformances, corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs), audit actions and manufacturing risks.
  • Participate in value stream planning and strategic activities, maintaining a valid capacity model with Operations and developing forward-looking plans for equipment, technology, resources and capital requirements.
  • Lead technical improvements under the team's Value Improvement Program (VIP), identifying and prioritizing opportunities in quality, service and cost and ensuring disciplined execution and benefit realization.
  • Build strong relationships with equipment suppliers, system integrators and external design houses, challenging technical proposals and ensuring appropriate engineering standards, acceptance criteria, documentation and support arrangements are in place.
  • Evaluate emerging automation and manufacturing technologies for opportunities to improve the reliability, capability, productivity and competitiveness of the value stream.
  • Ensure equipment and process changes appropriately consider machinery safety, CE requirements, EHS impact, ergonomics and maintainability in collaboration with relevant site functions.
  • Demonstrate a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality, ensuring direct reports understand and comply with applicable regulations, procedures and training requirements.
  • Lead performance management and employee development activities, including objective setting, coaching, succession and capability planning, and development of the technical skills required to meet business needs.
  • Deputize for the Engineering Manager as required and undertake other projects or responsibilities assigned by the company.

Education & Experience:

  • Hons Bachelors Degree (Level 8) or higher in engineering or a related STEM discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in manufacturing engineering, automation, equipment engineering or a related technical manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, coaching and developing engineers or technical professionals.
  • Strong technical knowledge of automated manufacturing equipment, controls, mechanical systems, equipment reliability and process improvement.
  • Experience applying structured problem-solving, validation and engineering principles within a regulated quality system.
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated ability to manage priorities, solve complex problems and deliver results across cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and drive alignment.
  • Experience in the medical device or another highly regulated manufacturing industry is an advantage.
  • Experience supporting high-volume, highly automated manufacturing operations.
  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience leading capital equipment, automation or manufacturing improvement projects.
