We know what you are thinking…WHAT IS THE ROLE AND WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? 👀

As a Staff Site Reliability Engineer II, you play a critical role in a team that architects, builds, scales, monitors, and secures our cloud infrastructure. You lead performance and reliability improvements across Housecall Pro’s databases and data usage patterns, working cross-functionally to champion scalable, cloud-native systems that support self-service and high availability.

You bring deep technical expertise and a collaborative mindset to partner with product, engineering, and platform teams. You proactively identify and resolve production issues, focusing on long-term maintainability. You join developer calls, provide architectural guidance, and coach best practices with empathy and clarity. You navigate infrastructure trade-offs with ease and contribute to strategic initiatives related to security, compliance, and business continuity.

You thrive in fast-paced environments and are comfortable in on-call rotations, using your expertise to triage issues and guide resolutions. You are joining a squad committed to enabling a large, fast-moving engineering organization through reliability, mentorship, and scalable systems design.

What you do each day:

  • Enjoy a mixture of schema design, reliability engineering, query and performance automation, security, and operations work
  • Engage with engineers requesting support on a variety of projects related to infrastructure, observability, security and reliability
  • Help develop and implement database scaling strategies like sharding, replication, and data partitioning for high-growth applications.
  • Maintain and optimize MySQL and PostgreSQL databases for performance, stability, and security.
  • Design, build, and maintain database schemas and storage systems that support scalable application growth
  • Monitor and troubleshoot production applications and databases, ensuring high availability and performance
  • Optimize cloud resources to ensure cost-effectiveness and scalability
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to lead initiatives such as disaster recovery, ETL, data classification, software upgrades, and compliance
  • Foster a culture of best practices by providing mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, evaluating and integrating new tools and methodologies to enhance our service delivery capabilities

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in DevOps, Software Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or related roles
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, and managing relational databases in enterprise or government environments
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Extensive experience with cloud platforms and services (i.e. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization technologies (i.e. Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong background in monitoring and alerting tools (i.e. Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) to ensure system reliability
  • Strong knowledge of database architecture, data modeling, indexing, and query optimization
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate and implement creative solutions
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (i.e. Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi)
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality results

What will help you succeed:

  • Strong systems thinking and ability to balance long-term objectives with immediate priorities
  • Comfort with discussing tradeoffs between B-tree and bitmap indexes
  • Understanding (and helping others understand) Cardinality, Data types, Transactions and Constraints in database design
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Prometheus, ELK Stack)
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management
  • Understanding of software development and agile methodologies
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for identifying and implementing innovative solutions

Location Dependent Information

This role is open to candidates and the expected salary range for this role is $136,000 - $170,000. The specific salary for the successful candidate will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location. This role is also eligible to participate in Housecall Pro’s equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance (medical, dental, vision, disability), employee assistance program, 401(K), flexible time off, paid parental leave, tech reimbursement, and other company benefits.
