Who We Are & What We Do
At Helix, our mission is simple: to help everyone improve their lives through their DNA.
Ready to make a real-world impact with your skills? At Helix, we're transforming healthcare by making genomics a standard of care. We partner with health systems and life science companies to accelerate the integration of genomic data into clinical practice. Join us in building a future where healthcare is personalized, proactive, and powered by genomics.
What is special about this role:
The mission of the Helix Research team is to conduct, facilitate, and publish cutting-edge genomics research, especially in relation to health outcomes. We collaborate with clinical, healthcare, and life science partners on clinically-relevant population-based genomic studies. We typically combine genomic data (Helix Exome+Ⓡ) with phenotypic clinical information obtained systematically from EHRs and medical claims, through collaboration with physicians at our health system partners, via biomarkers (such as proteomics and laboratory tests), as well as other modalities (self-reported data, wearables). We believe that everyone will be sequenced as part of routine medical care in the not-too-distant future, and our fast and nimble team helps generate the evidence to turn that faith into fact.
As a Senior Research Scientist, you will:
  • Push genomic medicine forward by assessing clinical impact and utility of polygenic risk scores, pharmacogenomics, HLA types, rare variants, CNVs and other genomic applications in various health conditions across large, diverse population cohorts
  • Organize and parse various types of medical data (EHR codes, notes, imaging, biomarkers, self-reported data) into rich phenotypes for analysis
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external teams, including our health system partners, to conduct research on genomic and phenotypic data to replicate published studies in new cohorts and discover novel associations
  • Communicate your findings internally to key stakeholders and externally to partners and scientific peers at conferences and in publications
  • Have the opportunity to shape how Helix partners think about and integrate genomics into their business model and clinical care pathways
About you:
  • An MD or PhD in genomics, medical informatics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, epidemiology or a related field, plus post graduate experience
  • Experience with analysis of large human genomic datasets, such as UKBiobank, All of Us, TOPmed, etc. using open-source bioinformatics tools / packages (Python, R, Hail, PLINK, etc.)
  • Experience parsing real world evidence (RWE) from claims, electronic health records, registries, biobanks.
  • Outstanding communication skills as well as broad research interests that will enable them to facilitate interactions between clinicians, bioinformaticians, scientists, and business and learn new areas easily.
  • Fluent in English
  • Strong programming and scripting abilities in languages (Python, R, SQL, etc).
  • Entrepreneurial spirit -- eager to jump in, define, and refine projects as needed
Pluses:
  • Strong publication record
  • Working knowledge of OMOP and/or other CDM
  • Experience working with cloud-based analytical platforms (AWS, etc.)
  • Experience working with health systems, payers, diagnostic testing
  • Experience with remote teams/consortia/group collaborations
  • Experience with Health Economics and Outcomes Research
  • Experience with LLMs or AI
