Overview

GitHub is the home for all developers and the platform where the world builds software. As AI reshapes how software is imagined, created, secured, and scaled, GitHub and Microsoft have a unique opportunity and responsibility to define what the future of software development means for developers, enterprises, partners, and the broader technology ecosystem.

We are looking for a Sr. Director of Brand Strategy to lead the strateg for Microsoft’s developer platform across content, narrative and production systems. This leader will help define how we show up to developers across GitHub, Copilot, Azure, Foundry, VS Code, Visual Studio, CoreAI, and the broader developer ecosystem.

The role is accountable for turning complex product innovation into clear, developer-authentic stories and distinctive creative work. The right leader will connect brand strategy, launch storytelling, customer insights, technical craft, communications, and editorial content into one coherent engine.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can make strategy tangible. Success requires two strengths at once: the creative taste to know what great looks like and the operating rigor to make great work repeatable. This leader will stay close to the work by improving briefs, sharpening ideas, guiding production, leading critique, and making the creative decisions required for major moments to land.

This leader will help build a modern Brand and Content Production Studio that can:

  • Define and evolve a durable developer platform narrative.

  • Raise the quality, distinctiveness, and consistency of developer-facing creative expression.

  • Build a tiered launch content system that matches creative investment to product and audience impact.

  • Create reusable editorial, social, motion, demo, customer-evidence, and executive storytelling systems.

  • Connect awareness, proof, product activation, adoption, retention, and advocacy through measurable content paths.

  • Use AI-enabled workflows to increase production capacity while preserving craft, judgment, and technical credibility.

Responsibilities

Brand, narrative, and platform strategy

  • Define and evolve the brand and narrative strategy for developer-facing work across GitHub and the Microsoft developer platform.

  • Translate company strategy, product vision, audience insight, market position, and our cultural DNA into clear creative direction.

  • Build narrative and messaging systems that connect product truth, developer needs, customer evidence, technical proof, and business outcomes.

  • Ensure launches, campaigns, demos, customer stories, web, social, editorial content, field assets, and executive moments reinforce a coherent platform story.

  • Protect the distinctiveness and developer authenticity of GitHub while helping Microsoft present a more connected developer experience.

  • Partner closely with product and engineering leaders to ensure narratives are technically credible and grounded in real developer value.

Creative expression and content leadership

  • Set and continually raise the creative bar for developer-facing storytelling, writing, editing, motion, video, demos, social, web, and executive content.

  • Lead priority programs from early strategy and briefing through concept development, production, distribution, and performance review.

  • Directly shape briefs, narratives, concepts, critiques, production plans, and major deliverables.

  • Champion creative work that is clear, human, technically astute, and authentic to developer audiences.

  • Build standards, examples, and critique rhythms that make quality visible and repeatable without making the work formulaic.

  • Balance strong internal creative ownership with selective use of agencies, vendors, and production partners.

Content production and launch systems

  • Own the content strategy and production model for priority launches and major developer moments.

  • Define launch tiers and content bills of materials based on audience opportunity, business importance, product readiness, narrative value, and intended behavior change.

  • Build intake, planning, prioritization, resourcing, review, and measurement mechanisms that reduce reactive production and clarify what gets made.

  • Connect launch narratives across product pages, docs, blogs, social, demos, video, executive communications, customer evidence, and field-ready assets.

  • Clarify roles, decision rights, quality standards, and partner expectations so teams can move faster without sacrificing craft.

  • Reserve premium creative attention for the moments where stronger work can materially improve reach, understanding, adoption, or brand meaning.

Customer evidence, demos, and activation

  • Build a repeatable customer-evidence and proof storytelling capability with predictable sourcing, capture, approvals, distribution, and reuse.

  • Shape customer stories that demonstrate real product usage, developer impact, and business outcomes.

  • Partner with product, engineering, field, customer success, communications, and marketing to identify proof points early enough to influence launch narratives.

  • Develop demo and executive storytelling frameworks that communicate strategic value and workflow change, not only feature capability.

  • Ensure priority content experiences give developers clear paths to learn, try, use, and deepen adoption of products.

  • Define success before production begins and build post-launch learning loops that improve future briefs, narratives, asset mixes, and creative investment.

AI-enabled content operations

  • Build AI-enabled workflows for research, planning, brief development, creation, adaptation, review, localization, reuse, quality assurance, and measurement.

  • Use automation and GitHub-native workflows to increase production capacity and reduce repetitive work.

  • Establish quality controls that protect editorial judgment, accessibility, technical credibility, legal requirements, and brand integrity.

  • Create an operating model that improves speed and consistency while preserving original thinking and creative ambition.

Studio and organizational leadership

  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team spanning writing, editorial editing, content strategy, motion design, and related creative and production capabilities.

  • Build a culture where creative ambition, strategic thinking, production discipline, inclusion, clarity, and accountability reinforce one another.

  • Establish clear roles, decision rights, prioritization rules, critique rhythms, production standards, retrospectives, and team-health practices.

  • Stay close enough to the work to improve briefs, sharpen ideas, guide execution, and make difficult creative decisions.

  • Build the team’s capabilities in integrated storytelling, technical fluency, AI-enabled production, measurement, and creative craft.

  • Represent the Studio with senior leaders and partners across product, engineering, product marketing, communications, docs, social, events, brand, field, customer success, and executive teams.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years experience at an agency or with brand marketing, communications, marketing strategy, social media, customer evidence, or related field
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field AND 10+ years experience at an agency or with brand marketing, communications, marketing strategy, social media, customer evidence, or related field
    • OR Master's Degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field AND 8+ years experience at an agency or with brand marketing, communications, marketing strategy, social media, customer evidence, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years experience executing a communications or marketing strategy.
  • 10+ years experience with marketing and campaign management.
  • 10+ years experience working cross-functionally with other teams (e.g., Design, Communications, Revenue, Customer Success, external agencies/internal).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building brand strategies, narrative systems, messaging architectures, creative platforms, or content operating models for complex technical audiences.

  • Deep understanding of how developers and modern software teams work, and how AI is changing the software-development lifecycle.

  • Experience connecting content and creative investments to audience engagement, developer activation, product usage, or other measurable outcomes.

  • Technical fluency and working knowledge of GitHub sufficient to build credibility with developers, product teams, and engineering leaders.
  • Experience scaling a content or creative production system while improving quality, speed, role clarity, and organizational trust.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and major programs from strategy and concept through production, distribution, and performance review.
