Overview

GitHub is looking for an experienced Product Designer to join the Design team.

At GitHub, we build solutions that improve the developer experience so they can learn, collaborate, automate, build, and deliver software with quality and confidence. As a Product Designer, you will partner with other designers, product managers, and engineers to build the future of developer tools and interactive experiences extending across the web, IDEs, terminals, and mobile. In this role you’ll have the opportunity to work extensively on designing the GitHub Copilot experience (e.g. Agents and CLI)

Dive deep into the future of developer tooling as you spearhead the design of the GitHub Copilot experience, including groundbreaking work on features like Agents and the powerful AI powered CLI!

The GitHub Product Design Team is a group of talented individuals with varied backgrounds in product design, design systems, design ops, front-end development, and illustration. You'll prioritize customer experiences, working closely with systems designers, engineers, technical writers, and product management to create and push for high-quality design.

Staff Product Designers at GitHub are expert individual contributors; they're given a lot of autonomy and trust to work on our most impactful design projects. For this specific role, you will report directly to the Director of Product Design for Copilot.


Responsibilities

  • Shaping: Defining great products and developer experiences with a point of view, where good defaults and what not to include is as intentional as essential as what makes it into the final solution.
  • Systems thinking: This role requires a designer who can think systematically when it comes to information architecture as well as existing and emerging UI patterns.
  • Progress and tempo: it's easy to get caught up in the meta-design details, so our team must be mindful that we keep making decisions and move forward quickly. We prioritize progress over correctness.
  • Curiosity: In a fast-paced environment like AI and LLMs, our designers remain curious and comfortable learning about existing and upcoming new capabilities to identify opportunities.
  • Ideate: Guides communication with cross disciplinary teams inside and across job families through all stages of ideation, design, and development. Owns communication for what one is doing in a proactive way. Explore and shape solutions for existing and new AI experiences based on existing and upcoming model capabilities.
  • Design Quality: Design responsive and accessible experiences that work across multiple platforms.
  • Communication: Guides communication with cross disciplinary teams inside and across job families through all stages of ideation, design, and development. Owns communication for what one is doing in a proactive way.
  • Collaboration: Builds meaningful relationships across the product, engineering, and other cross-functional partners you're working with. Connects dots between teams to enable collaboration, identifying opportunities to build on the work of others and leverage previous work.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • 10+ years experience in product or service design
    • OR Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8+ years experience in product or service design
    • OR Master’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years experience in product or service design
    • OR Doctorate in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 4+ years experience in product or service design
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Experience as a Product Designer working with Engineers, Product Managers, and other Designers.
  • Experience designing end to end complex, multi‑workflow SaaS products.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with rapid prototyping and working with developer tools, specifically AI agents and CLI.
  • Portfolio showcasing your involvement in projects, highlighting your hands-on experience as a product designer.
  • Experience designing for Large Language Models and AI.
  • Experience designing for developer tools.
  • Experience contributing to or using an established design system.

Compensation Range

The base salary range for this job is USD $140,400.00 - USD $372,300.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.
