Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Performance Engineering Group at GM Motorsports is seeking a highly skilled Performance Engineer to focus on the modeling, simulation, and optimization of power unit performance . This role is pivotal in developing competitive advantages through advanced simulation techniques and close collaboration with internal engineering teams and external partners. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in high-level motorsports, with experience in PU performance optimization, modeling, and integration with vehicle simulation toolchains.

What You’ll Do

Collaborate with GM-supported race teams, internal engineering groups, and external partners to:

  • Identify and address gaps in current PU simulation models and toolchains.

  • Development and validation of PU performance optimization tools.

  • Design and refine simulation methodologies to enhance PU performance.

  • Conduct sensitivity analyses to evaluate powertrain impact on lap time and energy management.

  • Develop and optimize energy recovery and deployment strategies for race scenarios.

  • Perform pre-event simulations to assess chassis and powertrain performance under varying conditions.

  • Build and integrate mathematical models of PU components, including ICE and ERS, within advanced vehicle simulation frameworks.

  • Communicate findings, development updates, and tool enhancements across internal and external stakeholders.

What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Motorsport Engineering, or a related field.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in power unit performance engineering within high-level motorsports (e.g., F1, WEC, IndyCar).

  • Proven expertise in PU modeling, simulation, and optimization.

  • Strong understanding of internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and energy recovery systems.

  • Experience with vehicle simulation environments and toolchains (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, GT-Suite, AVL, Dymola/Modelica or equivalent).

  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar).

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

  • This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Motorsport Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience with current or next-generation F1 power units under 2026 FIA regulations.

  • Prior F1 experience in PU, modelling, simulations and performance optimization.

  • Knowledge of control systems and their integration with PU models.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
