What You'll Do

As a Tax Technology Sr Consultant, you will lead the execution of Avalara’s tax registration and compliance modernization programmes. Reporting to the Tax Director, you will translate operational strategy into structured cross-functional initiatives that simplify processes, strengthen platform readiness, and deliver scalable, high-quality compliance solutions for customers.

This role combines deep domain expertise with change management and transformation execution ownership. You will influence Product and Engineering roadmaps to ensure alignment with operational priorities and drive automation initiatives that deliver measurable improvements in efficiency, quality, and customer experience. Success requires strong executive judgment, disciplined programme governance, and the ability to lead complex initiatives across multiple business units to completion.


What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead execution of tax compliance transformation programmes, ensuring alignment between Operations, Product, Engineering, and key stakeholders.
  • Partner with Program Manager, overseeing Operational input, monitoring project boards, Kanban flows, tickets, and sprint progress to proactively manage risks, dependencies, and delivery timelines.
  • Define and document comprehensive operational requirements aligned to the Product Roadmap, ensuring automation initiatives are scalable, measurable, and technically consumable.
  • Design and lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) by Operations, coordinate progress updates, communicate feature releases, and ensure cross-functional integration.
  • Lead structured change management across Operations to ensure consistent adoption of new features, workflows, and platform enhancements.
  • Design and implement performance dashboards and governance frameworks to monitor automation impact, SLA adherence, quality standards, and customer satisfaction.
  • Identify systemic risks and operational inefficiencies, driving structural improvements that enhance scalability and resilience.
  • Provide senior escalation oversight for platform-related issues, minimizing disruption and safeguarding customer experience.
  • Provide second-level support to colleagues on complex platform and Jira issues, liaising with GSO, Content, Engineering, and Product to ensure effective resolution.
  • Coach and develop senior analysts and team leads to elevate capability and operational maturity.
  • Deputize for the Director in strategic forums and cross-functional engagements as required.

AI Bar Raiser

As an AI bar raiser, you will elevate how AI and automation are operationalized within compliance programmes by:

  • Translating strategic automation priorities into high-impact AI-enabled initiatives across multiple tax types.
  • Embedding an AI-first operating model that strengthens scalability, operational resilience, and infrastructure readiness for business growth.
  • Influence architectural decisions with Engineering to ensure AI solutions are embedded within workflow design at scale, without compromising compliance integrity, operational resilience, or quality standards.
  • Ensuring AI adoption delivers measurable improvements in efficiency, accuracy, conversion, and customer experience.
  • Building AI capability across the function by coaching leaders and embedding AI-driven execution practices.

Operational Bar Raiser

As an operational bar raiser, you will elevate delivery standards across the domain by:

  • Designing scalable execution models that improve reliability, reduce risk, and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Driving accountability for SLA performance, escalation governance, and cross-functional programme delivery.
  • Embedding data-driven oversight to monitor quality, efficiency, and customer outcomes.
  • Fostering a culture of disciplined execution, structured programme management, and continuous improvement.

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Taxation, Accounting, or technology related discipline.
  • Deep expertise in Tax Compliance, including Licenses and Registrations across VAT, Lodging, Hospitality, or related domains.
  • 6+ years of experience leading cross-functional technology programmes or operational transformation initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of registration platforms and tax technology ecosystems.
  • Proven experience driving automation, product implementation, and Agile programme delivery at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and operate effectively across multiple organizational levels.
  • Strong analytical capability, executive communication skills, and a data-driven decision-making mindset.
  • Experience applying AI and automation technologies to deliver measurable operational and customer outcomes.
