As our Indirect Tax Research Analyst (GIS), you will shape Avalara's indirect tax automation platform by researching and interpreting complex Sales and Use Tax laws, jurisdictional boundaries, and taxability rules. You will combine advanced GIS expertise, indirect tax research, and AI-driven analysis to ensure Avalara's solutions remain compliant, accurate, and scalable across North America and select global markets. You will report to Senior Manager, Indirect Tax. This is a hybrid position in our Durham location.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be
Research, monitor, translate, and interpret North American geo-spatial boundaries and tax rates to ensure accurate tax decisioning.
Maintain geo-spatial boundaries and tax rates by tracking jurisdictional changes, including annexations and de-annexations.
Contact tax departments and government agencies to obtain official compliance requirements and verify rate or boundary updates.
Document all boundary and rate research findings in required formats, tools, and internal systems with accuracy and consistency.
Conduct web-based research and use subscription services to gather tax information; stay up to date with tax news and legislative changes.
Meet scheduled deadlines to incorporate research findings into Avalara tools and ensure content updates.
Collaborate with team members to complete tasks across multiple concurrent projects.
What You'll Need to be Successful

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree (finance, economics, business administration, law, accounting, GIS, or related fields)
3+ years of related experience, or a Master's in GIS without any equivalent work experience.

Technical & AI Skills:
Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g., Esri, QGIS) and familiarity with geospatial concepts.
Experience with AI-enabled research and automation tools for parsing regulations, generating taxability logic, and maintaining scalable tax data.
Experience with mathematical calculations, percentages, and accounting principles applied to indirect tax compliance.
Familiarity with modern software applications and willingness to adopt new technologies.
