What You'll Do

Avalara is looking for an accomplished Director of FP&A and Strategy, reporting into the SVP, Finance and Strategy to guide financial planning, long-range modeling, and strategic insights that guide our growth trajectory. You will partner with General Managers (GMs), the CFO, and the SVP Finance to connect strategy to financial outcomes, ensuring Avalara delivers predictable, scalable performance. You will manage Avalara's long-range planning model, the "beat and raise" analyst three-statement model, and will lead our efforts to adopt AI and automation across FP&A to improve forecasting accuracy, speed, and insight generation. You combine deep financial modeling expertise with an innovation mindset. This is a fully remote, individual contributor role.


What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Strategic Planning & Business Partnership

  • Partner with GMs, CFO, and senior functional leaders to align strategic and financial goals across Avalara's teams.
  • Lead development of the Long-Range Planning (LRP) model, connecting strategic plans to revenue growth, profitability, and cash flow outcomes.
  • Provide data-driven insights and financial perspectives to support executive decision-making, capital allocation, and strategic prioritization.
  • Improve financial planning processes through automation, AI integration, and predictive analytics.

Financial Modeling & Forecasting

  • Manage and refine the "beat and raise" three-statement model, ensuring dynamic forecasting and sensitivity analysis across the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow.
  • Implement AI-enabled modeling capabilities to automate data ingestion, enhance scenario modeling, and identify performance trends.
  • Integrate segment forecasts and models into the consolidated enterprise view for CFO and Board-level reporting.
  • Promote best practices in modeling design, version control, and model governance across the finance organization.

Operational Excellence & Decision Support

  • Establish goals that tie operational execution to financial outcomes.
  • Deliver executive-level insights and reporting for quarterly forecasts, earnings preparation, and long-term planning.
  • Support projects such as pricing strategy, investment prioritization, and M&A analysis.
  • Develop FP&A analysts in advanced modeling, automation tools, and AI adoption.

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate strategy, or strategic finance; SaaS or high-growth technology experience.
  • Expertise in three-statement financial modeling, driver-based forecasting, and long-range planning.
  • Experience adopting or applying AI and automation tools for forecasting, trend detection, or data analytics.
  • Technical proficiency in financial systems (Adaptive, Anaplan, Planful) and analytics platforms (Power BI, Tableau, or equivalent); experience with SQL or Python.
  • Experience communicating analytical findings for a range of different audiences.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field
