Job Description

What You'll Do

Avalara is an AI-first company. You will use AI to enhance productivity, quality, innovation, and customer value. AI is embedded in our workflows and products. Success at Avalara requires embracing AI as an essential capability, not an optional tool.

As a Senior Research Analyst, you will shape Avalara's indirect tax automation platform by researching and interpreting complex Sales and Use Tax laws, jurisdictional boundaries, and taxability rules. You will combine advanced GIS expertise, indirect tax research, and AI-driven analysis to ensure Avalara's solutions remain compliant, accurate, and scalable across North America and select global markets. You will report to Manager, Indirect Tax.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

  • Tax Research & Rule Management: Interpret Sales and Use Tax laws, maintain jurisdictional taxability rules, and translate updates into both clear guidance and AI-ready logic.
  • AI, Automation & GIS: Use AI and geospatial tools to detect law changes, generate machine-readable logic, validate boundaries, and streamline workflows.
  • Compliance Assurance: Conduct rigorous testing of tax rules and transactions to ensure accuracy, consistency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Leadership & Representation: Mentor analysts, produce well-cited research, and represent Avalara in external forums and regulatory discussions.

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree (finance, economics, business administration, law, accounting, GIS, or related fields).
    • Master's in GIS
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of experience in indirect tax (advisory, consulting, or in-house compliance), GIS jurisdictional research, or regulatory compliance.
    • Experience in handling high-impact projects in tax research, compliance, or automation.
  • Technical & AI Skills:
    • Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g., Esri, QGIS) and familiarity with geospatial concepts.
    • Command of AI-enabled research and automation tools for parsing regulations, generating taxability logic, and maintaining scalable tax data.
    • Comfort with mathematical calculations, percentages, and accounting principles applied to indirect tax compliance.
    • Familiarity with modern software applications and willingness to adopt new technologies.
  • Core Competencies:
  • Conduct research and deliver error-free, source-backed compliance insights.
  • Interpret complex legal language into clear, actionable compliance rules.
  • Demonstrate communication to align and gain buy-in from cross-functional stakeholders.
