As a Director of Engineering, you will lead the technical strategy for Avalara's customer onboarding experience. Your mission is to make it as seamless and efficient as possible for customers to go live with Avalara products,.
You will lead multiple engineering teams focused on building self-service onboarding workflows, intelligent configuration tools, and scalable integration infrastructure. We are looking for close collaboration with the go-live operations team, product, design, and customer success — ensuring that technology and process work hand in hand to deliver a world-class onboarding journey.
You'll help shape the engineering organization, influence product strategy, and build systems that power the next generation of Avalara's self-serve onboarding.
You'll report to the VP, Engineering.
What Your Responsibilities Will Be
- Drive Go-Live Product Experience
- Define and deliver the engineering roadmap for onboarding and configuration flows across Avalara's products.
- Partner Across departments
- Collaborate deeply with the go-live operations team to identify onboarding pain points, validate technical solutions, and build tools that reduce manual touchpoints.
- Lead Engineering Teams
- Lead and scale multiple engineering teams, promoting high standards in system design, software quality, and team performance.
- Recruit Top-Tier Talent
- Attract, hire, and retain exceptional engineering talent. Foster a culture of quality, inclusivity, and continuous learning.
- Customer-Centric Delivery
- Develop solutions that accelerate time to first value for Avalara customers — including guided setup, contextual help, data validation, and thoughtful defaults.
- Architecture & Operational Excellence
- Ensure systems are designed with scalability, reliability, security, and observability in mind. Establish engineering best practices and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
- Data-Driven Decision Making
- Leverage customer usage data, telemetry, and experimentation to inform engineering and product direction.
What You'll Need to be Successful
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Requires 15+ years of software development experience and at least 8 years of leadership experience.
- Leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- An ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
- Experience working on multiple cloud technologies.
- Experience delivering high-quality software projects.
- Familiarity with multiple authentications, authorization protocols, and application/Infra Security
- Expertise in front-end technologies such as React, TypeScript, modern component frameworks, and associated build/tooling ecosystems.
- Experience developing AI-first user experiences, including integrating with LLMs or building AI-driven guidance, recommendations, or automation.
