About the Role:
Avalara’s Product Security organization is looking for a Staff Technical Privacy Engineer for our data security and technical privacy program. In this role you will be the lead engineer in a team whose mission is to ensure that our products are designed, developed and deployed with strong AI, data security and privacy controls. You will work closely with our engineering and AI data analytics organizations to define privacy and data security requirements and help implement privacy-by-design at scale in our platform and services environments. This is a unique opportunity to make real impacts to our overall security and regulatory posture and define the technical direction and evolution of our privacy program across our platform and services.
You will be reporting to Sr. Manager, Product Security
What Your Responsibilities Will Be
- Define cross-functional data security initiatives incorporating data privacy and security controls into product design and development processes. Mentor junior engineers.
- Design and build privacy and anonymization features into datastore, IAM/IDM, and application-layer technologies.
- Create quality written work product and engineering artifacts for both technical and non-technical customers.
- Be a subject matter expert and ambassador to Avalara Engineering on privacy engineering, anonymization, AI and encryption technologies.
- Partner with engineering, legal, compliance, and security teams to ensure privacy and security features are properly integrated into all stages of the product lifecycle.
What You'll Need to be Successful
- A B.S. in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or a related field
- Programming skills in at least one of Java, Go, Python, .NET
- Knowledge of relational and non-relational database, and analytics technologies
- In-house experience working with SDLC, and microservice-based platforms
- 12+ years of experience working on security engineering systems, data security and/or privacy technologies to include encryption algorithms, privacy-by-design, block-store security, data masking, anonymization implementation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Deep technical ability, and extensive history of successful execution in technical privacy, product or application security within your former roles
- Familiarity with AI, Snowflake, and/or AWS and GCP application analytics services
- Previous experience aligning privacy regulations such as EU GDPR, related regulatory standards, and PIAs (Privacy Impact Analyses) into deliverable product features
