As Senior Director of Product Management, Exemption Certificates, you will be the subject matter expert and leader in our Product team responsible for building Avalara’s third largest product line. You partner with our Certificates GM to establish OKRs and a 3-year roadmap to provide clarity on product vision, and to challenge and inspire an ambitious team of Product Managers. You will help drive strategic cross-product and cross-functional initiatives to transform our business and customer experience, focused on efficiency to enable growth.
Preference for Durham area hybrid, with options for US-remote for the right candidate.
What Your Responsibilities Will Be
- Partner with the general manager for Certificates
- Interact with customers and Avalara subject matter experts to understand market needs
- Work closely with product managers to drive consolidated strategies and roadmaps to ensure cohesion across team members and product lines
- Work with product managers on goal setting and plan execution
- Be an evangelist of the Avalara product strategy
- Articulate a clear and compelling product vision for Exemption Certificates
- Define metrics that measure key business objectives
- Partner with other Avalara leaders and stakeholders to drive strong relationships that foster goal achievement and issue resolution

What You'll Need to be Successful
- Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in exemption certificate management.
- A strong leadership style that combines product, operational, program and sales knowledge and experience to ensure end to end accountability
- You are a leader who motivates, inspires, and grows your people. You consistently hire A-players, earn their loyalty, and grow their careers.
- You've led a team of 5-20 directs or matrixed and can effectively work cross-functionally to align and inspire. Led/influenced product, design, engineering teams of 40 – 100+
- Track record of leading products and product teams from inception through launch for solutions that target small, mid, and enterprise-level businesses
- Experience with agile development methodologies and commonly used tools such as Jira, Confluence, etc.
- Experience with customer journey maps to define end-to-end customer experiences
- Demonstrated experience partnering cross-functionally
- Strategic thinking with the ability to go deep when necessary
- Hands-on experience analyzing data and deriving outcomes
- Team player able to drive results through influence and enthusiasm
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with experience conducting briefings and demos both internally and with customers
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (accounting, business, or computer science); MBA desirable
- 10+ years of related experience and 5+ years of leadership and management experience
