What You'll Do

Avalara is looking for a Technical Lead. We are growing and evolving our product and looking for motivated people to join us on this journey. A successful you will be a well-rounded software engineer with experience delivering software at scale in an agile environment.

Avalara is the worldwide leader in sales and use tax calculation. The work we do is fundamental to electronic commerce. We're the first to admit it - sales tax isn't charming. But changing fundamental business processes -- that's big time. And that's what we're doing every day, bringing technology to bear on the arcane process of sales tax calculation, reporting and remitting.

You will be Reporting to Senior Engineering Manager

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

  • Design scalable software components
  • Design integrations with other systems at Avalara and with external partners.
  • Participate in an agile development team – including development, test automation, planning, backlog refinement and support.
  • Be part of innovation culture and find ways to improve processes and services.
  • Implement best practices for coding and development processes
  • Support our production platform, including troubleshooting & bug fixes
  • Support and develop software engineers by providing advice and mentoring
  • Lead conversations across teams and leadership to lead and on critical topics.
  • Manage priorities, trade-offs, forecast/manage risk, identify solutions in team deliverables.
  • Work with the Product Managers to refine user stories
  • Build features from beginning stage through production deployment and operation
  • Maintain overall product quality by fixing bugs and improving performance
  • Perform code reviews and ensure coding standards

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • 8+ years software development experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer, science, or engineering.
  • Experience in engineering for developing available and fault tolerant software in a SaaS cloud environment. (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Experience in designing and building scalable micro service architecture.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server/ any other RDBMS, Entity Framework.
  • Working knowledge of Web Services, REST APIs, Event Driven solutions.
  • Working knowledge of containerization tools like Docker, Kubernetes
  • Working knowledge of JIRA, Confluence
  • Working knowledge of source control tools such as GitLab, CI/CD.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as code i.e. Terraform
  • 2+ years of experience with AWS cloud platforms.
  • Experience working in product-based organizations.
