Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that’s our company’s purpose – and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.

The role

Agile Six is looking for a Technical Lead / Program Architect to join a newly formed team. In this role, you will align engineers, designers, product, and stakeholders around a shared technical vision. You’ll foster psychological safety and continuous learning through pair-programming, facilitating design reviews, and translating architecture into language everyone can rally behind. By connecting day-to-day engineering work to the broader mission of modernizing the federal grants lifecycle, you’ll empower teams to innovate, tackle systemic challenges, and deliver lasting impact. This is a hands-on coding role. You’ll architect a greenfield cloud ecosystem, craft reusable components and service APIs, and embed best practices such as advanced design patterns, rigorous code reviews, DevSecOps automation, and responsible use of AI tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor. These technical choices will balance long-term scalability with immediate delivery needs.

This is a Key Personnel role, as stipulated by our contract, considered "essential to work performance". The resumes of Key Personnel are subject to government review and approval, and any changes to Key Personnel (such as voluntary or involuntary separation) may require government oversight.

Please note, this position is anticipated, pending contract award response.

Responsibilities

  • Architect the green-field ecosystem – Evaluate options and select cloud, language, data, and deployment patterns that balance agility, cost, security, and maintainability.
  • Integrate with legacy systems – Ensure seamless interoperability between legacy platforms and the new green-field architecture, supporting data and workflow continuity throughout the modernization effort.
  • Build shared components & service APIs – Design and implement authentication, data services, eventing, and front-end libraries that enable autonomous feature teams to move fast.
  • Lead complex engineering efforts – Apply advanced design patterns to drive scalability, performance, and efficiency; use robust code-review practices, automated tooling, and metrics to ensure quality.
  • Establish DevSecOps pipelines – Stand up CI/CD, IaC, automated testing, and SBOM/SLSA practices that meet federal compliance requirements.
  • Champion open source – Partner with the Open Source Program Manager to publish code, automate license scans, and welcome external contributors.
  • Mentor & uplift – Guide engineers through technical reviews, pair programming, and feedback sessions; support recruitment, code challenges, and the engineering community of practice.
  • Leverage AI responsibly – Use Copilot, Cursor, and related tools to analyze code, develop features, write tests, and debug issues—always reviewing outputs for accuracy and security.
  • Model Agile & self-management – Foster a culture of experimentation, team self-organization, psychological safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Evolve with the mission – Adapt responsibilities and grow skills as team needs and project scope change over time.

Basic qualifications

  • 13+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years as a senior architect or technical lead.
    • If you have a Bachelor’s degree, at least 9 years of experience are required. If you have a different degree (e.g., Associate’s or Master’s), let us know and we’ll adjust the experience requirement accordingly.
  • Proven record of architecting and evolving complex, cloud-native systems across diverse domains—balancing pragmatic trade-offs while maintaining long-term quality.
  • Hands-on expertise with modern architecture patterns (microservices, event-driven, serverless, etc.) and DevSecOps automation.
  • Experience working in many different areas of the software stack and solving a variety of engineering problems.
  • Demonstrated experience self-organizing: taking ownership of planning and managing your own work, with a bias toward action and hypothesis-driven experimentation.
  • Strong track record of mentoring engineers and communicating clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Effective use of AI tools and services in the software-development lifecycle, coupled with responsible oversight of AI-generated output.
  • Highly effective in Agile environments, embodying an Agile mindset from planning through delivery.
  • Experience using automated tests to validate software and build behavior, as well as writing testable code.
  • Understanding of common design patterns, software development principles, front-end engineering patterns, and how to apply them.
  • Ability to work independently on high complexity tasks, and to collaborate as it makes sense for the problem and the work.
  • Has lived and worked in the United States for at least 3 of the last 5 years; willing to travel occasionally if a client requires it.

Additional desired qualifications

  • Development experience in AWS, Azure, or comparable cloud environments.
  • Expertise with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. Web Design System.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team, including research, design, engineering, and product.
  • Experience working with government agencies.
  • You are a U.S. Veteran. As a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, we recognize the transition to civilian life can be tricky, and welcome and encourage Veterans to apply.

At Agile Six, we are committed to building teams that represent a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. Even if you don't meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply. We’re eager to meet people who believe in our mission and who can contribute to our team in a variety of ways.
